Commonly known as the valley of a 1000 Lingas, Kbal Spean: is set deep in the jungle to the north east of Angkor. This ancient site is commonly known as the valley of 1000 lingas. The site is reached by a 40 minute walk to the top of the waterfall where hundreds of phalluses are carved on the riverbed, as well as carved figures and animals.

Kbal Spean is a little out the way, and not as spectacular as the Angkor Temples, but it is a very unique and scenic spot and well worth the visit if you have the time. The waterfall and jungle are most spectacular and photogenic in the wet season- but also worth visiting in the dry season to see the rock carvings, even though the waterfall is just a trickle.

The site is about a one hour drive from Siem Reap via hire car or tuk tuk. Your guesthouse can arrange a tuktuk driver who will take you to the site, from the tuk tuk you will enjoy some great views of the countryside along the way, but be warned the road is very dusty in the dry season so be sure to take sunglasses and a scarve to wrap around your mouth like the locals do. Yuu shouldn’t need the scarf for the whole trip- just when a four wheel drive wizzes past you and stirs up the dust! Tuk tuk tours are not expensive ( around $20 per day for 2 people) but if you prefer to travel in comfort with a little less adventure then get a hire car and driver. Ideally book a tour with a guide who will go the waterfall with you and tell you about it’s history, but if you are on a budget you can easily find the site and expore it yourself as the track is well marked. Kbal Spear is a popular spot and you will see other tour groups and trekkers along the way on most days.

There is a restuarant where you can buy food and drinks at the entrance to Kbal Spean- and there is also a wildlife sanctuary right next door which is well worth a visit if you have the time.
